Xbox and IGN strike at the Qore of Playstation
June 26th 2008 05:51
Sony have recently released a subscription service that gives users access to what can best be described as an online magazine. When your money is paid, you can access exclusive interiews, videos, demoes and the holy grail of gaming nerdom, early stages beta testing. As Sony beefs up their online offerings, Microsoft have counterpunched with the news that IGN will be delivering new content, named "IGN Strategize", via the Live service from Friday June 27th.
If you are in Australia as am I, you are a little out of luck. The Xbox community site say "Inside Xbox is currently available only in the U.S., U.K., and Japan. It will be available in more regions in coming months." Promising though!
At the moment IGN Strategize will offer hints and tips to games. The question that raises it's head is "where will Microsoft take this?" Will there be beta and other exclusives for Gold members? Will there be other websites to contribute content (cough Gamerchip cough)? Online content is the current battleground between the consoles. Microsoft have the box seat at the moment (pun not intended), and a subscription service through Playstation currently only adds value to the content provided through the pay to use Gold option through Xbox. Having said that, the IGN Strategize content is also available via PC (or devices that can browse the net...). As time goes on and more content is added, you can be sure that the winner of the content war will also take a chunk of users with them.
