Xbox 360 Owners Are The Ones Buying The PS3 (LINK)

According to an article by the San Jose Mercury-News, it looks possible that Xbox owners are accounting for the current explosion in PS3 console sales.
David Klein, executive vice president of Centris, a Los Angeles research firm, says "most new consoles are going into homes that are either replacing an existing console or adding a second (or third) unit."
Research has tracked back to 2005, showing that since then a minute percentage of homes are adding consoles. Rather, people are upgrading their old systems or adding another current generation console. They calculate that 40 to 42 percent of U.S. households are using at least one game console, unchanged from this time of year in 2006, and up by just 1 percent over 2005. The Wii may change these statistics in the following years.
Conducting a little research myself, I have also found that many new PS3 owners had already delved into next generation gaming. The year head start for Microsoft meant that a majority of those that are buying the PS3 now are keen gamers that needed to experience the enhanced graphics, sound and gameplay offered early through the Xbox 360. Although the Centris article mostly investigated homes that contained a gaming console of any kind, at this stage it is obvious that the miserly amount of new gaming homes combined with the early sales explosion of the 360 and now the PS3 adds up to more homes carrying both.
It also shows that even though the gaming industry has overtaken Hollywood in generating revenue, gaming is still a tight knit community rather than a recognised mainsteam form of entertainment.
