Mario and Luigi, the most recognisable characters in gaming (although Mario gets all the girls), are the stars of the most popular game in video gaming history, according to the poll run by www.onepoll.com.
The poll, taken from 2,000 british gamers, points to the icons of gaming throughout the years as still being the most popular.
The top 20 is listed here, and there are a few surprises.
The Sims hits in at fourth place (I would take it that the expansions were not included), with a few other modern titles mixing it with the venerable cabinet games. Most notably, games such as Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas clock in at a respectable seventh, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider at 11th, and surprisingly Guitar Hero in at 20th.
The biggest surprise for GamerChip? It has to be the number one itself. The universal appeal of these crazy characters is unprecedented and yet to be repeated. Normally the lines are drawn between east and west, but the crazy italians have managed to unite the world under one coloured mushroom. Personally, I still prefer the Great Giana Sisters...(video below)
