Sony Wins Leipzig - By Default

August 22nd 2008 01:51
Sony Game Convention Leipzig

The Game Convention in Leipzig, advertised as the biggest gaming event of the year, underwhelmed with its poor showing from the majority of the gaming console world, which proved to be a good thing for Sony. After pundits declared Microsoft the winner of E3 on a points decision, Sony would have been looking to bounce back with a good showing. And with Nintendo missing in action and Microsoft resting on their laurels the floor was theirs. Unfortunately, the only announcements to come out have been about the new wireless Keypad (impractically placed and a year late), updated Petz or eyetoy, a harddrive upgrade, and a free music video service... already available through the spotlights section of a Media Centre enabled 360 (for those lucky US owners).

Even the PSP3000 ended up little more than an update, still lacking a touch screen. It was an interesting development hearing of the external microphone that can be used for Skype calls, but it's still a half measure. It's also a phone or it's not.

This would have been the perfect opportunity to grab back the gaming worlds attention with some news on the much maligned Sony Home. The lack of annoucements over the year must be growing more and more irritating to the fans who showed their support in adapting the future proof system, only to find that so far the future is yet to arrive.

A strong, active Sony is good for gaming in general. With Microsoft 'innovating' through very Wii-like ideas the consoles are getting a little samey. We need Sony to step up and bring something new to the table, for all gamers on all platforms. We know they can do it... But when?

Hey, Gamerchip, while there wasn't much in the way of new hardware, us console gamers aren't actually looking to pick up a new doodad every year or so - buying a console and using it for 5-10 years is what we do! And if you're talking games, Sony stepped up to the plate (and continues to do so this year far, far better than MS or Ninty). Heavy Rain looks both phenomenal and a bit different, Wipeout HD looks brilliant, LBP is both a breath of fresh air and fun, expanding the Eyetoy scene is building on one of Sony's key casual innovations. Compare that to Microsoft's announcements this year (not just Leipzig, I'm talking through all of 2008) and we've got a pretty stark comparison. On a side note, I followed E3 pretty closely and the 360s announcements were far less exciting (and forward-looking) than Sony's or Nintendos. Sony had new games and new services, and while there was some Microsoft-aping, there was also plenty of genuinely new stuff. Microsoft's big news, on the other hand, was DLC for Fallout 3, copying Singstar and Miis, and getting it's hands on FFXIII. While this was all good news for Microsoft, other than Fallout 3, it's all playing catch-up, and they've still got a long way to go.
