Sony - Home Is For Gaming Not Socialising

July 31st 2008 02:34
sony home

Sony is looking to clear the air surrounding their upcoming PS3 online portal, Home. In a presentation given by SCEE's Darren Cairns and Liam Wickham at the Develop Conference event, they have outlined that the focus is on gaming and definitely not on social networking.

You may have come to the conclusion from the screen shots and features let out so far the vision for Home was akin to that of Second Life, but according to Cairns and Wickham . it is the furthest thing from their minds. "Home is not a social network - it's focused on games. It's a visual representation of the PlayStation community."

This message is sure to have been intended to placate users from both sides of the console fence, with critisism of the service coming in thick and fast. Most gamers have indicated that they definitely do not want an artificial gateway between them and their gaming. It seems that living rooms hosting movies with your photos hanging up are for real life.

They also revealed that the closed beta would be expanding imminently and that open beta is still scheduled to roll out this year.

I think Home will help Sony sell a lot more PS3s. Even my wife is vaguely interested in it. She enjoys the Xbox live but loses interest very quickly. A 3D environment might hold her attention more haha.

I cant believe there are people who don't want Home. For me personally as I'm moving away my home its the perfect way to keep up with friends (also moving away) and family (my dads interested but need to convince others), as you can share photos etc

I think this will do absolutely nothing for sony sales wise. it offers nothing you can't get far easier on a PC. The only people I can see this attracting are those that have to have pretty pictures on screen like little kids, to hold their attention, and they will get bored of it. A simple messenge service with somthing to show who is online (much like XBL/steam/gamespy etc) would be far more use than this bloatware

obviously you have an Xbox because PS3 already has 98% of what XBLA offers but for free including messaging and a service which shows who is online and what game they're in. your statement is rather trite and ignorant IMHO. Home is to be an optional interface for people to explore and launch games together.

Home has an area to keep trophys and such doesn't it? That reminds me of my favorite 2K games back before stupid Madden killed them.

Actually i do have a PS3 and that is my whole point what is the point of giving you waht you more or less have. why is it when anyone says somthing negative about a PS3 they have to be a 360 owner, can't PS3 owners be unimpressed by home, or do we have to be drones who think if sony do it then it must be the right thing. Fact is they initially said home was for social networking, now they have done a U-turn and said it's not. If it's not then why not have just an improved verison of what we already have then which would be far more effective?

It's because it was designed for what they say it isn't, but the general thought is that it's a waste of time outside of the sony fanatics, and that is why they have pulled this u-turn, the realised the general public is not impressed.

So i gues that makes me a 360 owner without a 360 then as I don't buy into gimics and think they are the second comming.

I bet practically everyone will have had there fill of home in a week if not less and be right back to simple menu interface. The same goes for the 360 bloated new GUI as well.

Home is OPTIONAL people, no point in complaining about something that's free, it won't affect you anyway.
