The PS3 High Price Is For Ten Years Of Potential Says Steingberg

Sony have had a tough time deciding on what the PS3 is, a social networking device or hardcore gaming machine, media centre... or hardcore gaming machine, but in an interview with Gamasutra Scott Steinberg has said that the the high price is for the ten years of potential that will lead into the console being so much more than... a gaming machine.
The PS3 surviving for ten years is a key company focus says Steinberg, "the ten-year strategy is ingrained in all of us. [SCEA president and CEO] Jack [Tretton] has brought that to all levels of the organization."
Steinberg feels that the "future-proofing," will be enough to offset any advances in the industry, and presumably competitors consoles. The plan is to continuously add firmware updates and applications to the core system... as well as hard drives and other pereipherals it would be safe to assume. Let's hope that these additons get to us a little quicker than Home.
Damage control has been a priority since the launch of the console, who were beaten to the punch and the prize by Microsoft who were able to claw their way into the hearts and minds of gamers for a year before the launch of the PS3, then also until recently due to the restrictive price. Steinberg believes though that the pricing was justified."The price of the PS3 is high, but you're paying for potential," he explains, and feels that "whether it's Skype or some other peripherals, it's not just a dumb terminal that lies secluded and isn't enhanced with all the recent technologies and opportunities."
Gamers know that this has been a measuring competition from the start. With that thought in mind, lets give Steinberg the final word: "Blu-ray is bigger, and Blu-ray games are going to be the biggest games in the industry." Is he suggesting that other console gamers have a case of PS envy?
