PS3 Left For Dead By Valve

September 24th 2008 05:30
valve

Valve are among the most respected and successful game developers of recent history. With a string of uber-successful titles franchises such as Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Portal and in the future the highly anticipated Left 4 Dead. Add to that what is arguably the most used and reliable digital distribution system, Steam, and you have a very desirable business partner.

Which is a shame for PS3 owners. If you are a fan of any of these games, combining that with a love of the Sony console means that something has had to give. That comprimise has come in the shape of EA. GamerChip examines the implications of this predicament and why poorer versions of these great games are set to continue for Playstation gamers.

Looking at the history of Valve products, The brilliant Orange Box had to be handed over to EA to even get a version for the PS3. A lack of any development team in Valve gives a fairly clear indication of their priorities and resulted in a pretty dissapointing port. While this was appreciated by the consoles owners, the port suffered from unique issues, such as dropped frame rates and inconvenient load times. The polish and talent that created the original games never had the chance to give the PS3 version the spit and polish that is their trademark.

Secondly, Valve have flat out denied that they are developing a PS3 version of Left 4 Dead. Adding a groan to the already vocal chorus of "Wha?" reverberating through the Playstation forums, EA have once again raised their hand to get the title across.

It's a sorry situation for Playstation gamers. While the Xbox360 and PC get the benefit of the master touch of a beginning-to-end product from Valve, PS3 owners suffer the fate of the slow start to life of the console, hampered by the exhorbitant development costs and lack of install base. The result? Even at this point in the consoles life cycle we are seeing lazy coding due to the percieved lack of return from PS3 titles.

I can only wish PS3 owners the best of luck, your tenacity in investing in the futureproof console has been tested over the last couple of years. It is time for developers and Sony to give you your dues.

Well, then if your a PS3 (only) gamer then just tell Valve to screw off, and support something else. Valve is a successful developer, that can't be argued, but money that they could have gotten could support other more deserving developers. If that money isn't important to them, I guess their loss, someone else's gain, right?

I say fuck Valve......there are other developers more than happy to work with the PS3. Valve must have something against Sony obviously or they are just incompetent when understanding the PS3. And if EA is going to do the port my only advise to them is to get their shit together...don't fuck up this port and stop bitching and moaning about the PS3 is hard to code and develop for...if that's the case...take some damn classes on coding for it or get some help....I'm sure Insomniac and Naughty Dog are willing to help the unfortunate souls have no clue as to what the hell they are doing when port a game over a PS3.

how many copies do you think will actually sell to justify creating a team for? Not every developer has to develop for sony. What's the big deal? Maybe sony done something to piss Valve off. True it sucks but working with sony is difficult and that is spoken by a variety of different talented studios.

^Your kidding right? The games industry is like the movie industry. It only cares about money. If the PS3 was the most successful and of the 3 current gen consoles and has the power it has they would be begging to support PS3. If there was no 360 do you think a "Traditional PC only" company like Valve would NOT support the PS3? Also its not like 'The Orange Box ' sold nothing on PS3. Maybe valve will learn the hard way when consoles eventually take over PC's.

I don't like Valve, even if they decided to make games for the PS3 I wouldn't buy them just because they are assholes.

They don't deserve our money, they can't make good decisions to save their live (AKA The Box Art for Left For Dead)

Valve is just pissed because they prob tried to do a game and were too stupid to figure it out

You talk like if Valve was the greatest videogame company... Left 4 Dead is a really dissapointing game. Dude, the zombies KICK the humans... A game of zombies where the zombies don't bite, is not a fucking zombie game.

Valve, suck THIS.

It's not even the return they would get... Gabe Newell has said on numerous occasions that he HATES the PS3 (at launch, they said Sony should "start all over again") and that the PS3's architecture was just too complicated compared to the 360's.
While the PS3 has outrageous potential, until developers finally understand it, Sony's console will always get the short end of the stick.
In a few years though, the PS3 could be well ahead of the game.

I just think the PS3 is too complicated for them, and Modders aren't nesessarily Coders. They have yet to upgrade their engine to even run optimized for the 360 and PC, if they can even do that.

Valve has their own platform.. Steam.. Even the Xbox guys are lucky there was an orange box, not to mention the PS3 systems. Gabe (an ex-microsoftie) doesn't like the PS3, so what? Those of us that can afford PS3's have PC's, PC's that can run Steam. If we just "have" to play portal, we will on our PC's.

I could also argue that Sony should avoid a partner like Valve at all. Granted Valve makes great games, but if you look at what's in the pipeline for this holiday season, you'll see that we're already heading for game overload. With so much content out now (who doesn’t have a pile of shame they haven’t gotten to nowadays?) Sony doesn't "need" Valve at all, especially if they are hostile to the platform.

This is not about Valve, someone needs to write an article about how difficult Sony is to work with, this is Sony's fault, its 2008 and they still have not learned to work with developers, and not against them.

PS3 is a nightmare to dev for and more devs should stand up and say enuff and abandon them till they get their act together.

Wow. You think cause valve is too lazy and dont like to develop on the PS3 that im disappointed? Gabe no neck and Valve could eat a fat one. I have plenty other games to spend my money on the PS3. Until No neck decides to make the same quality games on the PS3, I have no need to buy any valve games. Gabe could choke on a hotdog for all i care.

Well, Sony had to use the cell processer, which is good for processing but sucks to program for. All sony has been doing lately is making bad choices.

Dev tools were released 8mths after the ps3 shipped. it hurt devs at the time which is understandable. but alas they still shipped the tools, its apparent that there is a laziness to try and understand the ps3 even after the tools were released, i enjoy portal, and HL2 on Pc and havnt bought them on my Ps3 cause i had them for my PC a year earlier, well HL2 anyways. look at the devs for motorstrom who had a good grasp of the cells architecture and how many companies asked them for help and were more than willing to pitch in.

as for L4D, w/e, i could care less really. RE5 is more intriguing to me.
