PS3 And 360 Gamers Are Basically The Same

June 24th 2008 01:53
360 and PS3

It has long been held true that gamers from the Playstation and Xbox communities are a completely different species. You may agree or disagree (and I urge you to examine the forum posts to help you decide) but Experian Consumer Research has decided to put some hard facts on the table, and the results may be shocking for some.

The studies released a few days ago are an interesting read. Xbox 360 owners had an average age range of 35-44, the PS3 over 44.

User chart

The most interesting and potentially disturbing findings were that both camps had ver similar interests outside of gaming. Both 360 and PS3 owners were shown to be less different than they would lead each other to believe and to share similar interests such as board games, go-carting, and watching less television than the walking dead that don't game.

Perhaps this study will allow console users of all flavours to come together over other, non console related hobbies? Surely gamers from all sides would forget their differences over scrabble? Or perhaps something where 'fanboy' and 'noob' couldn't be spelt out? Like Guess Who, as long as you ruled out "Ummm, are you a loser who doesn't have any Blu-ray?" I think we'd all get along just fine.

If you are interested in finding out more you can check out the Earthtimes website (which can be found through the heading link). They say, "Experian Consumer Research recently found while differences exist between gamers and the general consumer population, there are also differences between consumers who bought Xbox 360 and those who bought PlayStation 3. One such difference is the age range of consumers who purchase the consoles, with PlayStation appealing to an older crowd and Xbox being favored amongst younger gamers. Since all gamers in general are not identical in their preferences, awareness of these differences in the consumer population is important when trying to reach specific consumers through video games. Similarities between the two consumer populations have also been found, such as comparable media preferences.

Video game technology continues to improve, meaning that video games are not going to be outdated anytime soon. On the contrary, video games are now appealing to more and more people and growing in popularity with a wider age range. Being aware of the characteristics of gamers of all types and will be beneficial to companies trying to reach this consumer segment. "

The war will still rage between console gamers of all ages, and this study may supply ammunition or help heal old wounds. One thing is certain though, and that is that there will always be a die hard fan base in each camp, that these camps won't need adult supervision and will be set up on the hills that we are heading over.
