diablo 3 forum

Is this the official confirmation we have been waiting for? Battle.net now have an official General Discussion Forum page ready for your rabid cries of lust over the possible third coming of Diablo.

This might suggest the game is coming, but unfortunately we will have to assume that it is indicating the possibility. One astute user has noticed that the forums also head into Diablo 5 and we safely assume this weekend won't reveal the release of that. One thing is for sure though, Blizzard are the masters of hype. Very few developers could produce as much excitement around what is basically a fanboy dream diary.

Star Wars Unleashed

LucasArts have taken the extrordinary step of risking one of its most highly anticipated titles yet by laying off staff from the development team of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

An ex member of the crack Jedi programming troupe has revealved that member of the team were released from their contracts before the title had wrapped up. He went on to say that the current team size was insufficient to handle the remaining work.

LucasArts has been qouted as towing the familiar company line around the importance of internal development, but you would have to question their commitment in the wake of this news.

The only hope looks to be through outsourced help. If this is the case, the last parts of the game will be completed by completely new people, with no history in the title. The Star Wars franchise has already suffered a credibility blow with the inclusion of characters in the upcoming Soul Calibre title. Although the majority of Unleashed has been completed this could spell bad news for a successful, bug free release.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is slated for release on September 16th.

EA Sports

Just when you thought you had fit as many drum kits, steering wheels and tennis racquets into the lounge room, EA plans to include peripherals with its sports titles.

In a presentation from the Paris GDC, EA Sports VP David McCarthy suggested that it could only be 12 months before we see new sports titles released including the relevant equipment. McCarthy says “You have to be careful with it, because Rock Band, that’s a great peripheral, but it’s a big expensive box.” He went on to say that the plan would receive the go ahead “provided it doesn’t raise that barrier of entry and accessibility (for the gamer).
“I think you’ll see games using that Rock Band peripheral strategy from EA Sports, even within the next 12 months.”

The comments were made in the context of new Wii releases but did not disclude other platforms. Could we see an EA branded tennis racquet that works like a Wii controller for the PC, 360 and PS3? At this stage this seems unlikely but with the influence EA has over the sports gaming market the possibility should not be dismissed, especially considering the huge profit margins in these peripherals combined with our child like love of new gadgets and toys. This all adds up to ensure that this strategy is less of an if but when.

assassins creed 2

Fans of the Assassin's Creed franchise need to start flooding the forums and emailing their votes through to get a sequal according to Ubisoft.

In a recent piece by Forbes, Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America, explains that the publisher won't release Assassin's Creed 2 until there is "more anticipation for it."

Ubisoft have a precedent for this type of behaviour, showing signs of nervousness in the face of positive sales of their unique IP.

An Example cited by Forbes is PoP: Sands of Time. This title sold "2 million copies in its first month," but failed to perfom as a long term franchise. It wasn't until 3 years later that we saw a follow up.

This looks to be a sign of the times. With production costs exploding, studios are looking to release new titles when they are ready rather than sticking to a schedule. Sales do not seem to be seasonal, but based on the positive build up through showings at expo's and media nights. Blizzard are the obvious example of this, setting the benchmark and creating a gaming behemoth in the process.

Assassin's Creed has received mixed reviews and the public opinion is currrently very much split. With all the innovation and style the title displayed, in the end it was little more than repetitive "go to X which leads to Y" gameplay wrapped in an interesting story.
Ubisoft's appeal to gamers to show their interest in the franchise could very much be a good thing. Fans will have the oppoortunity to share their likes and dislikes before production goes into full swing. The flipside though is that if the masses have already written it off and are consumed by the swarm of new offerings, which are getting more compelling each release, then perhaps Ubisoft will rethink the games future all together.

Call Of Duty 5 and 6 news

COD 5
Activision's chest gets even bigger

With a nod to the extended development time of today’s games, Activision have already indicated that the venerable Call of Duty series will continue with a fifth, and rumoured a possible sixth instalment. Stepping back to the games original WWII era, number five plans to take what many feel to be a tired setting into the next generation. Destructible terrain is set to reshape the battleground, with players able to take down buildings and burn through fields with new weapons such as the incredibly fun sounding flamethrower. To avoid too many cliché’s from the back catalogue of WWII games COD 5 will see us fighting against a new enemy - Japan. For added variety we will also be transported to the Russian front to fend off the invading Germans. To cater for the strategically minded a command function will allow you to order your forces to best take care your foes

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky Preview

June 5th 2008 05:55
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky

S.T.A.L.K.E.R began life as the game voted least likely to appear. Years passed before it finally arrived, so many that we thought the mock up game box would be placed on the shelf next to the new Duke Nukem. Thankfully the time was well spent, producing one of the most atmospheric games experienced, a brooding mix of desolate landscapes and grungy characters, covered in the dyamic lighting and weather effects that perfectly set the scene for a well fleshed out RPG set in post-meltdown Chernobyl. Amazingly, only a year later and the prequel is well down the development road. An eager and optimistic fanbase are expecting S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky to hit shelves and virtual stores on August 29
