Sony To Miss Out On Spore Origins

EA, the publisher who shot to number one on the sales charts with nothing more than a Creature Creator design tool, has announced Spore across a multitude of mobile platforms except for Sony, with no other console version planned except the Wii.

The PSP of late have ungone something of a resurgence. Although still critisised for it's lack of quality gaming titles, its PS3 sharing functions and hackability have kept it surviving in the face of the ridiculously popular DS. But to keep in the race, it needs to have at least the same big titles as the other portable devices. Unfortunately is will not be getting Spore to add to it's library.

EA is set to hit us with Spore in September, initially on the PC and Mac. More limited versions will be available for the Nintendo DS, iPod Touch and Apple iPhone and a slew of other mobile phones. Spore creator Will Wright recently has also revealed that a Wii version is being developed and you can be sure that the 360 and PS3 will not let themselves miss out on the action.

This generation of PSP lacks a touch-sensitive or tilt-control interface, but it is at least as good as your average mobile phone. And when you combine that with it's wi-fi connectivity, relationship with the PS3 and its storage space, you would think that it would be ideally suited to this community based game. Perhaps EA knows that there will be a future version of the PSP that incorporates touch screen and tilt features and is waiting for that time? Or is it the closed Sony gaming network that has put them off, as speculated elsewhere?

Check out the video of the iPhone version below.

Closed Sony gaming network? My understanding (as not-so-masterfully demonstrated by Konami with MGO) is that Sony actually has a very open network (UT3 is a better example), with some core features - call it the social democracy of online gaming. It's the 360 that while very full-featured and integrated, is closed off - ie, the communist state of online gaming. The Wii, on the other hand, is not very full-featured but still closed off and really a bit of a mess - I guess the Zimbabwe of online gaming. The PC, of course, it the original laissez-faire approach, with all it's benefits and pitfalls.

So I'd be surprised if it's the closed network holding it up. Although as a PS3, PS2, and PSP (and Gamecube - but I'm guessing that won't be getting Spore CC either!) it's a little disappointing that we won't get to play with it.
