LittleBigPlanet To Turn Your Content Into LittleBigProfit
October 17th 2008 03:07
Blogger Dean Longmore has picked up an interesting piece of information from the Sony PSN terms of use, in which they state that any User Material created throught the service (and we're looking at you LittleBigPlanet) can quite happily be sold by Sony who will even more happily keep all of the proceeds.
User created content is without doubt the way of the future. Just ask Will Wright. Both he and the boffins at Sony understand that there will be brilliant and enthusiastic (and sometimes, but not often, both) people who will spend days and weeks on labours of love, who wish to share their creations with the world. It's just that those people will have to be content in knowing that they are feeding the beast and deveopling for a title that will never return any of the money that is made from it. The terms of use look something like:
"You also authorise us [Sony] and our affiliated companies, without payment to you, to license, sell and otherwise commercially exploit your User Material."
Originally Sony had touted that selected users would be able to turn a profit from their work. If this is still the case remains to be seen.
It's an interesting discussion and one that Sony have laid out the groundrules for early.
