GFW - Live: Exclusive Games And Content Coming (LINK)
July 24th 2008 05:25
Remember that antiquated box in the corner, the one riddled with every virus released since 1993 and HDD overflowing with short video clips from sites that are banned in three countries? Well get ready to dust off the case and upgrade your video card (again) because Microsoft are planning exclusive content for the recently made free Game For Windows Live service, differentiating it from the XBL and PSN content.
Microsoft's senior director of global gaming, Kevin Unangst, says "the business model clearly now is a differentiator. Cross-platform is something the two have in common, but there may be different types of content between the two. Now that we'll have the Marketplace that we'll distribute content on, the content does not have to be identical, the game types may be different. Pricing models, which we're not going into detail on today, may be different as well, based on what the expectations and needs are of the PC market versus the console market. If you look at some of the things announced at E3, it is not a foregone conclusion that some of the things that are uniquely designed for a console will come to the PC and vice versa."
Could Windows Live finally be the vehicle for Microsoft to wade in and help Valve to reinvigorate the PC market? A free service with tailored unique content may give us a reason to put down the controller and patch our PC's to run the latest exclusive content... That and Spore of course.
