Gaming Magazines - To Read or Not to Read?

I used to have to walk through sno' to get magazine in old dae

Want to know something? Anything? You go to the internet. An almost infinite stream of real time information accessable by anybody at any time. There is no topic that does not seem to have its own permanent devotee pouring over it at every second of the day. Especially in gaming. Hi there by the way. The original computer geeks are todays gamers, the two are a perfect fit. And yet every month, without fail, I buy PC Powerplay. The irony is that I've only loaded one PC game since S.T.A.L.K.E.R. And even that I'd bought second hand a good year after it's release. If it wasn't for Crisis I probably would never have even upgraded my PC.

Having gotten into the writing game myself I realised that there are definite differences between online and published information. The internet can be it's own worst enemy. The huge amount of information, able to be submitted by anyone, leads to an almost as huge amount that is disposable and of very little value to begin with. The big gaming sites have begun imploding as news leaks out about agreements being made between them and game publishers that influence the result of their reviews. We have had examples of titles such as Kane and Lynch having their scores unfairly indubed with praise and other titles reviews withheld until after launch so that consumers might not be dissuaded form their purchase. The presssure of frequent updates to grab our attention is leading to stories being produced from nothing. Rumour sites are supplying headlines in an unmistakably tabloid style. All but too few forums are wastelands of misinformation, spreading their ill informed views and cluttering up the web. Our monitors are becoming clouded by the tainted reputation of online journalism.

It's these things keep me buying a magazine for a platform I don't even use anymore. Perhaps it's just the written form that lends itself to quality, the idea that once the words are on paper they are permenant. It could be the tradition of gaming magazines, built through a pre-internet era where the scene was very much for enthusiasts. i still feel that passion and enthusiasm when I read a good review. There is definitely an piece of me that's still knows that the PC is paving the way for gaming and that the console that is my current love is just a very dedicated PC. Whatever it is, it's undeniable that the writing is far superior in print than on the net, regardless of the size of the site. You will find thoughtful, considered opinion based on research and knowledge rather than heresay. Articles speaking of the state of the industry, the direction and future that lay ahead, ideas that seem lost in the now that is the net.
I'm not saying subscribe to PC Powerplay. Unless they start paying me. I'm not even saying that all gaming magazines are good. But maybe you should try to find one you like, and if you do, support it. They may be the last bastions of journalism we gamers have left.
