Gamers Are Not Just Shy Nerds (LINK)
June 25th 2008 02:58
Todays video gamers are a special breed. Once we were shunned, outcasts of society. You could find us herded together with role players and accountants (not that any of us would talk to each other, or understand the other if we did) in a world of mockery and pity.
But things have changed.
"From a clinical point of view, an addiction is a mental illness with very serious consequences," he said. The obvious signs of addiction are a withdrawl from society, becoming quiet and soltary.
Mr Loton's study discovered that gamers were more extroverted than originally thought, with only 1 percent indicating shyness.
It could also be time to get your Medicare cards ready. The American Medical Association (AMA) plans to formally recognise video game addiction as a mental disorder in 2012, finally confirming that it is the sane people that are locked away, leaving the others to walk free. And they are us.

I am equally at home hitting the clubs as I am grinding out 50 levels of mining in WoW or teabagging noobs on Halo 3.
I love to shock kids I overhear at the mall or swimming pool. They will be having a heated debate and I walk by and say "I'd pwn your noob ass in a second".
Stunned silence is usually the result. Nobody wants to get owned by a 31 year old guy dragging screaming kids around. It's so worth it too. Every Halo 3 kill with my 20 month old daughter screaming while The Backyardigans blares in the background is that much sweeter. And yes, I leave my mic on haha.

When I was a teen, it had that negative image, which is probably why they hate the idea. Younger generations are probably more accepting.
The interesting thing was, I asked one lady why playing video games was worse than watching TV?
