Do We Want Halo 4 If Bungie Are Not Involved?

mystery title gearbox

Rumours. They fill the time in between real news being released. We all deep down, perhaps secretly, absolutely love them. Especially when they are as juicy as Halo 4 appearing as a launch title for a new Xbox console without Bungie being involved. Even Passions couldn't come up with that one.

If we are to credit this rumour with even a grain of plausibility, do we actually want it?
Gearbox are touted as the new team to take on the next installment in the flagship series. But do they have the ability to take one of Microsofts most bankable franchises and continue its success?
Gearbox currently have five games in development according to their website, with one mystery title that helps to fuel the flames. A title that is described by Randy Pitchford in this way. "I’ve started a new project. It's big. It's, like, 'look-at-our-line-up-and-imag ine-something-even-bigger' kind of big. I’m directing it myself. I can't mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one."

Lets have a look at the Gearbox stable through the Gamers Almanac, Metacritic.

Brothers In Arms (Xbox, 2005): 85%
Halo (PC, 2003) 83%
Halo 2 (PC, 2007) 72%
James Bond 007: NightFire (Xbox, 2002) 78%
Half-Life: Blue Shift (PC, 2001) 71%

Pretty steady scores, although most of these have been expansions or ports of existing titles. It would be unlikely that anyone is going to accept Halo 4 scoring in the seventies... What may help though is that the leading man behind the script for Halo has crossed from Bungie to Microsoft, so a collaboration between Gearbox and Microsoft could turn out well, with the story developed by an experienced hand and the gamplay run by a team that has Halo experience and failry solid gameplay in their other titles (according to Metacritic at least).

Adding these points up, you would think that it could be a solid release for Gearbox. We have a team that has ported Halo to the PC in Gearbox, and a script writer from Bungie who could be at the helm. Only time will tell.

Honestly I think having someone else do the Halo games could be great for the series. It seems to me that Bungie is very good at developing original IPs, but their sequels aren't that great. If we're being completely honest with ourselves Halo 3 is almost identical to the first Halo, with minor improvements to weapon balance, vehicle control, and major improvements to the graphics. Personally I love Halo 3, it's a game that I still play, but the series needs more innovation. The Halo series is starting to fall behind the curve, with other companies catching up to the Halo franchise. I think Microsoft should hand off the Halo series to someone that can reinvent the franchise without alienating their core fans, and have Bungie work on a new IP.

Yea plz let someone else do Halo. Halo has been the same game since the 1st halo to the 3rd. Let someone new do something hopefully refreshing to the series.

it seems Ms are trying to get everything they can out of the halo series and bungie didnt want to do a fouth since it goes against the story, so Ms are making another company doing it.
its gonna be crap and this is just profiteering, no wonder most of the devs hate Ms
the halo series is very good but this is a bad idea
