Sony Admits Lack Of Developer Support (LINK)

The process for developing on the PS3 can be quite arduous

Sony have at last faced the awful truth that we have all known from the outset, that has given us a library of uninspired ports, frame rate issues and uninspired unique IP's: The difficulty in developing for the PS3 has driven away developers.

Sony themselves develop 30% of the consoles titles, leaving the rest to third party developers who had begun developing a year earlier for the Xbox 360. With the ease of working with the 360 and the exorbitant costs associated with the PS3, this left most AAA titles merely being ports rather than taking advantage of the superior hardware buried deep inside.

In a manner very unlike Sony, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide has come out and admitted to the problem and attempted to address it with the community.

Mr Yoshida said: "Sometimes we struggle to convince them (third-party publishers) to put more resources into the PS3."

He added: "We know there's a lot more that we can do, and with the massive growth of the industry we understand that third party publishers have so many choices, many more than they have resources."

Mr Yoshida told GamesIndustry.biz: "Because the 360 hardware was out earlier, the games were built based on 360 architecture. But still, they must have been planning to...release (the PS3 game) at the same time with the same quality. So they massively underestimated the effort that was needed to re-architect the game to property take advantage of the PS3's multi-core architecture."

In a machine that was always built with the future in mind and completely disregarding the present, the company is pinning its hopes on Blu-ray technology.

He said: "Timing-wise the unfortunate situation for the PS3 was that it didn't come out after a few years of the Blu-ray learning curve...so we had massive amounts of work to do and that really hit the profitability of the company.

"We tried as much as possible not to pass that cost on to consumers, but we do feel that the early adapters of the PS3 are getting good value (with the integrated Blu-ray)".

With only one truly great game released we have seen console sales jump through the roof. Sony fans, and indeed gaming fans in general, are hoping that something can be done to allow delevopers to learn the hardware and have it cost effective to release unique versions across all platforms.

In the meantime, I can be found indented into my lounge, beer and wireless controller at the ready and voice chatting to my friend over Xbox Live.

Dude, the PS3 has more than one great game released. It has several. But MGS4 is the first great exclusive published by a third party. The majority of Sony's first party line up is rather excellent!

the dude taht replied first is right. the ps3 has a hell of alot of more exlusives that are great. most of which are from Sony but hopefully 3rd party developers will stop whining about how hard it is to create a game on it and start learning how to do it. REAL programmers can code for the ps3, the ones that complain can't code for $hit!

The closing paragraph was uncalled for. PS3 is an amazing system. This is coming from somebody who owns all 3 systems. I am no fanboy, Each system has its good and bad, and the exlusives for the PS3 are all good apart from Haze =P

Thanks for keeping your opinion sane! I don't mind admitting the article was written with an inflammatory slant, and the forums have really taken hold of that and then some!
I truly am a gaming fan but haven't been compelled by any of the offerings on the PS3 until now. For me it is all about the experience, and so far the Xbox 360 has done a fantastic job of combining a fully featured and user friendly online experience, graphics that stand up, a good mix of traditonal Xbox titles and more Sony and Nintendo style, and hasn't cost me a fortune. It's a personal thing, and I don't mind the rational discussion. It's a shame that some people just want to flame away without adding anything to the discussion.
Feel free to drop by any time

Wahhhhhhhh. PS3tards cry like little Sony Zombie b!tches you are. Wahhhhhhhh. Want some cheese with that wine? Stop making excuses for Sony's Cell being very hard and very expensive to develop for. These Third Party developers have to run a profitable business. Don't blame them for going where the easy money is. Blame Sony's arrogant a$$ for putting Cell and Blu-Ray in the PS3. For launching later than the 360. For being more expensive. For having a poorly planned poorly executed online gaming service. For concentrating on thier own First Party studios and not showing the Third Party studios more love. Anybody else need a tissue?

"It's a shame that some people just want to flame away without adding anything to the discussion. "

You just admitted you wrote it to with an inflammatory slant, what were you expecting?

oh the ps3 is better, why? I own it, other then mgs4 theres no reason to use it. I had the 360 first and the 360 simply has the games and has the better online and better features overall.

Yes i wish the 360 had a next gen drive but what ya going to do. When the games i want for the ps3 arrive i will buy them one by one and enjoy the ps3. When in game xmb arrives and if its just lkike live then I will use the ps3 equally.

Bunch of sony fanboy crybabies. The sony zombies are crying bitter tears because 360 has all the best games and superior versions of multiplatform games. Sony has really dropped the ball this gen.

My favourite typo yet - "all m friends want a ps3 after laying mine..."
You can have an opinion about it being a good gaming system, but it's one hell of a lay!

it's only easier programming for the xbox because it's really just windows, so any dev that's made a PC game could also make a 360 game, it's a pretty piss weak to make out that the 360 is much better because of games which have mainly just been PC ports anyway.

Then people make out the 360 is some new advanced console when it's not much more than a core 2 duo and a 8800GTX GFX card bolted in.

Though with zero piracy on the PS3 it'll only be a matter of time before Devs will want to make a switch and start making some cash.

Its not hard to develop for the PS3
Naughty Dog worked from the ground up with Uncharteredrakes Fortune and that was a great game imo,Naughty Dog have since said they will show developers how to develop games for the PS3

In the meantime, I can be found indented into my lounge, beer and wireless controller at the ready and voice chatting to my friend over PSN. The difference is: my console has less but better exclusives, my console is beautyful and not as noisy as a vacuum cleaner, no RROD here!!! and I don't pay for PSN so far. Soon PSN will have more and superior features.

I thought this article would be factual, but bias had to be added...

It's saddening how this article became tainted right at the end with such a fanboy statement. As for people defending a console for what it has, and with true reasons, that is not fanboyism. Fanboyism is defending the RRoD and disk troubles, and the hard drive issues all involved with X360. The games are great, the hardware production is low grade. What I'm waiting for, is a list of games for 08 for PS3 and X360, then compare them side-by-side. Keep doing that for a year or two, and let's see where progress is being made. People need to stop going, "This system is better cuz it owns." as it's not stating anything. Looking at both systems, there are powerful exclusives on both sides. It's just depressing people can't see both sides of the lawn.

Agreed, the writer of this article undermined the whole piece by being an xbox fanboy....there is no doubt, whatever anyone says that the PS3 will stride ahead in the coming year and is arguably ahead already. (I own both consoles) XBOX Fanboys will reply to this post and say Xbox is better but they are blinkered....
