Gamer Chip - July 2008

naughty dog

Sony Online is starting to take shape. Well, at least another shape. And Richard Lemarchand from Sony-owned Naughty Dog believes this new shape will have an edge over Xbox Live.

Lemarchand says "I think there's going to be other things coming down the pipe that's going to give PSN as a whole a competitive edge... What I will say is as a games designer I'm very excited about net connectivity. I really like how Sony is thinking a little bit outside the box in terms of gamers as modern media consumers. With things like LittleBigPlanet looking towards consumer-generated content and with games like flOw and flOwer — which are art games — Sony is really looking to expand games as culture in the same way that pop music, literature and fine art are culture."

sega

You’d think that watching giants like EA and Activision lumber around would have Sega ambitiously planning to reach the same lofty heights. Not so, Sega of America president Simon Jeffery said in an interview with Forbes.

“We don’t intend to be an Activision or an Electronic Arts–one of those juggernauts,” Jeffery emphasized. “We’re actually really happy where we are. We can be small and agile and yet extremely profitable and successful. It really feels like this year we’re competing with the next tier up, and THQ is a good company for us to model ourselves on and go after in terms of market share.”

But don’t think that means Sega doesn’t have big plans in store. When asked where he’d like Sega to be in five years, Jeffery explained:

“Where I would really like for us to be is at the cutting edge of every platform, to be the go-to publisher for Sony with its next system and with Microsoft with its next system. We kind of are like that with Nintendo right now, and thanks to our relationship with Apple, we are kind of like that on the iPhone at the moment. But I want to really get that same kind of recognition with Microsoft and Sony. We have solid relationships, but when they’re launching a new platform I want them to come to Sega to build their killer app.”

Check out the link for Jeffery’s thoughts on EA and Take-Two, Sega’s plans going forward, and gaming’s rapid growth. Definitely worth a read.

saints row 2

THQ has excelled itself with its decision to hire porn star Tera Patrick to promote Saints Row 2, as you can see after the break. There’s a movie there consisting of the “actress” removing her blouse while talking about “extensive customisation options.” Seriously. Lots more of this to come, apparently.

sony home

Sony is looking to clear the air surrounding their upcoming PS3 online portal, Home. In a presentation given by SCEE's Darren Cairns and Liam Wickham at the Develop Conference event, they have outlined that the focus is on gaming and definitely not on social networking.

You may have come to the conclusion from the screen shots and features let out so far the vision for Home was akin to that of Second Life, but according to Cairns and Wickham . it is the furthest thing from their minds. "Home is not a social network - it's focused on games. It's a visual representation of the PlayStation community."

This message is sure to have been intended to placate users from both sides of the console fence, with critisism of the service coming in thick and fast. Most gamers have indicated that they definitely do not want an artificial gateway between them and their gaming. It seems that living rooms hosting movies with your photos hanging up are for real life.

They also revealed that the closed beta would be expanding imminently and that open beta is still scheduled to roll out this year.

New Halo Game This Year

July 14th 2008 06:48
new halo game

From Kotaku: Earlier this month, we heard a rumour that Microsoft were going to be unveiling a new Halo game at E3. A new Halo game with a twist: there'd be no Master Chief. That rumour's just picked up a little more steam, with GameSpot reporting that - according to "a source with knowledge of the studio's development slate" - Bungie will be announcing a new Halo game "sometime this year" (so not necessarily at E3). This game will be a "darker, grittier" Halo game, featuring a squad of human soldiers and gameplay that's "a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War". If Bungie are developing, that's exciting! But we'll wait for confirmation before popping the champagne corks, thanks
